On August 11th, SPEaC had the opportunity to meet with the Dallas office of Texas Representative Mark Veasey to discuss the importance of continued NIH-funded scientific research. This meeting was set up in collaboration with the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) 50 State Challenge (http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/50893/p/salsa/event/common/public/?event_KEY=77381).
Representative Veasey has been a democratic representative since 2012 serving an area covering Fort Worth, Arlington, Grand Prairie, Irving, and the southwest section of Dallas including Oakcliff and the UT Southwestern campus. He currently serves on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology and has historically voted in favor of increasing federal support of basic research. Therefore, part of our meeting with his staffers included thanking him for his support and encouraging him to continue promoting scientific innovation and development as a priority in Texas.
The remainder of the meeting focused on discussing how SPEaC can learn about the science policy needs of Dallas community and promote scientific education and awareness of the scientific research process. We are particularly excited to get involved in some of the STEM initiatives coming out of the Representative Veasey’s office: STEM Student App Competition and the 2nd Annual Teen Summit. These initiatives will give SPEaC an opportunity to connect with and inspire future scientists. The Veasey staffers also gave us some contacts in the Dallas Independent School District (http://www.dallasisd.org) to continue to learn about ways we can get involved in STEM education.
Overall, our meeting with the office of Representative Veasey was a great discussion between policy makers and scientists. SPEaC is excited to be a scientific resource to the Veasey office and to get involved in STEM initiatives in the Dallas community. We are also continuing to collaborate with ASBMB and are meeting with other Texas congressmen in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
